什么是遗传资源,为什么要加以保护?

摘要(Abstract):
我们正在迅速接近这样一个时刻:传统农业将不能维持世界人口激增的需要。解决这个问题的关键,不是以牺牲森林和半沙漠区为代价来增加农田和牧场,而是保持农业区大体不变,改进农业技术。这可以通过更好的农业方法以及更好的、能抗病虫害及更适应高温、干旱、盐碱等恶劣条件的品种来实现。为了培育这样的品种,作物育种人员需要抵抗力更大,适应性更强的基因。在保存下来的传统作物品种(或“当地品种”)和有关的野生品种中正在发现这些基因。
